Wizard of Oz Returns to TheatersOne of Several Events Celebrating the Film's 70th AnniversaryOn September 23, 2009 The Wizard of Oz returns to theaters in over 400 cities nationwide.
NCM Fathom, Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies present the classic film in its first High-definition presentation ever. This one night, one showing event commemorates the 70th anniversary of the film’s theatrical release in 1939, bringing the memorable characters and unforgettable songs back to the big screen. L. Frank Baum’s Book Comes to LifeA special introduction by classic film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies, Robert Osborne, will begin the evening’s festivities, followed by a featurette that looks at how L. Frank Baum’s historic novel was turned into one of the most loved and popular films of all time. This presentation, titled “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” will also include archived interviews, rare outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage. An exclusive clip of Ray Bolger dancing in High-definition as the Scarecrow will be seen for the first time ever. Academy Award HonorsThe Wizard of Oz opened at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in 1939, receiving five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It came away with two Academy Awards, one for Best Song – “Over the Rainbow” – and Best Original Score. There was also a special award given to Judy Garland for Outstanding Juvenile Performance. More Special Events PlannedWarner Brothers has other special events planned to celebrate the 70th anniversary, including an Emerald Gala at Manhattan’s Tavern on the Green with a performance by Judy Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft, on September 24th. Original actors who played the parts of the munchkins are expected to be on hand as well. A star-studded screening of the film in New York City will be part of the New York Film Festival on September 26th. “The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Editions,” filled with bonus features and collectibles, will be released on DVD and High-definition Blu-ray on September 29th. There will also be a 70th anniversary auction beginning September 10th and ending September 24th, with all proceeds going to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. There are limited seats available for the one night, one showing movie event and all presentations begin at 7:00 p.m. local time.
